Lord God,
We have sinned against you (by allowing others to destroy your creation);
We have done evil in your sight (and now have no idea how to fix the problem).
We are sorry and repent (though it is unlikely we will really deal with our addiction).
Have mercy on us according to your love.
Wash away our wrongdoing and cleanse us from our sin.
(Forgive us).
As the cleanup in the Gulf of Mexico continues, we pray once again for those involved in those efforts, and for those who have lost livelihoods. We mourn the devastation and pollution, and we repent of our complicity in the systems that allow such destructive accidents. Forgive us, Lord, and by your Spirit, make us better stewards of your creation. Amen.
But the corporate idol worship continues, even in the face of this catastrophic oil spill. In the face of Wall Street reform, the corporatists were siding with Wall Street too, even though they wrecked our economy.
Virginia’s climate deniers could not help but claim that global warming was a sham this past winter because it was so cold. Now it is the first week of April and it’s 90 degrees outside. Those same people are silent.
“The drought affecting Yunnan exceeds any from over the past millennium, according to the local department of meteorology. It is estimated that by May, one out of four people will have no drinking water.”
The climate is suffering and the result is that basic necessities like water are going to be more and more difficult to find throughout the world. It is no wonder that the Chinese government is buying water-sourced land around the world when you read the most recent Epoch Times article.
We must get serious about reducing the impact of climate change and conserving our resources in order to have a planet to leave to our grandchildren. We are meant to be the caretakers of God’s creation.
Greenpeace launched an ad on their “Polluter Harmony” website that sounded silly but shows dumb.
Casting Bob McDonnell as a drill-centric governor is one thing, but actually creating an ad that suggests he’s gay and likes to mix it up with other drillers is just dumb.
It’s a shame because the natural gas drilling debate is a serious one that is important to have because of our long term energy needs. Greenpeace dumbs the conversation down and uses a not-so-subtle bias that is contrary to the beliefs of most of their supporters, I would say.
Watch for yourself and tell us what YOU think. I think Bob McDonnell is smarter than this and as his press secretary told the media, he has better hair.

As we face one of the most difficult economic environments since the Great Depression, Virginia must get the most out of every tax dollar. SB109, patroned by Sen. Chap Petersen (D-34) will enshrine in law an executive order which requires that all executive branch state facilities that are built (from drafting process onward) or significantly renovated meet either LEED Silver or Green Globes “Two Globes” certification. This bill, as written, will not require a budgetary amendment. We strongly support passage of this legislation.

Though it isn’t often that we’ve found ourselves working with Del. Bill Janis (R-56th) on issues of mutual concern, this year we have found a piece of legislation that is both common-sense as well as integral to advancing our causes. HB389 creates an offshore wind authority that will have the responsibility of collecting the data for how the Commonwealth can most safely and efficiently harness electricity from the strong winds off of our coast.

As we approach crossover in the General Assembly, Virginia Interfaith Power & Light has done well in achieving our objectives on energy efficiency and creation care. Much of our work has been in the Senate so far. With the party makeup of the House of Delegates being so skewed away from support for our issues, the course of many bills through that chamber can be accurately predicted with or without advocacy work. It is oftentimes too difficult to flip the needed votes for what are generally considered left-leaning bills, and right-leaning bills have no real obstacles any longer to getting sent over to the Senate. With that in mind, I want to focus on five pieces of legislation that have taken been the focus of our work on the stewardship of creation.
Sign our statement and hold the ground on the Stewardship of Creation.
Tuesday at our Day for All People of Faith lobby event, I received an urgent text message from a fellow advocate on environmental issues: Sen. Jim Webb was considering whether to cosponsor the Murkowski amendment to a funding bill for the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The amendment would strip a great deal of the EPA’s authority to regulate anything related to carbon dioxide. This removal of authority would have had unintended and toxic consequences, such as disallowing them from applying Clean Drinking Water regulations to coal carbon sequestration projects.
